Our concrete water tank experts answer your FAQs about lead times, delivery, warranties and more

Call, email or visit our sales office to discuss your individual requirements. Our specialised sales staff will discuss tank options including a delivery timeline and book a date delivery.

Once your order date has been confirmed we will call to confirm delivery least a day or two before your scheduled delivery.  N.B. Please advise any special requirements.

Water tank manufacture is typically 3- 4 weeks from order but it may take longer in the busy summer periods or depending on options ordered. Please check with our specialised sales team re delivery timing or any other questions.

Our large range of tanks is well suited to having accessories and services added e.g. fire fighting fittings, anti-floatation sills, extra manholes, inlet muffle pipes, epoxy coatings, water pumps, water monitors etc. Please enquiry with our sales team.

Site checks are available for sites with difficult access or may require a special care with the installation e.g. 3 tank installation. Please discus when ordering tanks or advise at least 2-3 weeks prior to delivery for this service. Checks are subject to specialist driver availability in your area but is free of charge if ordering a Duracrete tank.

Bowers & Son Ltd, Duracrete tanks feature a 50 year design life and have a comprehensive 10 year repair or replace warranty.

If you wish to submit a warranty claim, fill out your details HERE

Producer Statements (PS1) are available for most tanks upon request. Typically a regional council may request a copy of the PS1 re regulatory requirements or an engineer for design requirements e.g. if tanks are to be buried under a driveway. We can also offer detailed sketches of most products to assist with your decision making.

If you require a PS3 you will need to ask your installer e.g. plumber/drainlayer, to produce this for you.  As the manufacturer, we cannot provide this.

Bowers & Son Ltd produce Duracrete tanks under licence and are a long established Te Awamutu family business. The family pride themselves on manufacturing the complete product from initial concrete batching through to tank manufacturing and finally site delivery and placement. All work is completed “in-house” with delivery via a fleet of Hiab delivery trucks piloted by specialist crews.

Duracrete tanks come ready to be used after site connections and subsequent water fill. All water tanks have overflow siphons fitted, balance pipe and drain bungs installed/sealed, manhole lid bolted down, air vent fitted and at least three knock-outs ready for inlet pipe to be fitted. N.B. All site connections etc are complete by your on-site professionals.

Tanks are cleaned as the final step in production before tank base and roof are sealed together in the factory. During road transport and placement some light internal dusting may on occur which will settle on the tank floor. Residues are not unusual and may include concrete as well as light building debris from your build. Deposits vary depending on what filtration is used before and after the tank. Any tank should be cleaned within 12 months of installation.

Tanks are made using steel forms to accurately mould the specialist self-compacting concrete. All concrete manufacturing and testing is completed on site in Te Awamutu in two specialised factories. Raw materials used are approximately 85-90% local area sourced e.g. stone aggregates, sand, lime etc. A small amount of product is imported such as clinker which is used to manufacture cement and steel fibre for reinforcement.

All materials as used in the concrete making process are suitable for potable (drinking) water. Lime as used in cement manufacture gives the concrete alkaline characteristics i.e. pH >7.0. The alkalinity of concrete works to offset the natural acidity of rain water pH ~6.0 with this being a unique property of concrete when used to manufacture water tanks.   The pH will reduce over time with usage but is dependent on your chosen tank set up.

Any new water tank will always exhibit some properties of the holding vessel e.g. a concrete water tank may smell of concrete. This not unexpected and over time this smell if apparent will go but is dependent on several variables. Some examples but not limited to include: a) Water used to first fill the tank – roof water is best but not always readily available. b) Initial high water usage – increased water circulation helps improves water quality. c) Time of year tank is installed – periods with high rainfall increases water flow / circulation. d) Size of roof area feeding water tanks – bigger area should have higher water flow. e) Use of overflow siphon to improve water movement in tank and prevent stagnation. f) Large diameter balance pipes to encourage flow between multiple tanks. New tanks will all also exhibit higher than normal alkalinity due to a number of factors with some noted above. Water circulation particularly in new tanks plays a critical role in reducing alkalinity and should be encouraged as much as possible i.e. initial higher water usage, flow into and from tanks, overflow siphon usage.

Seven ways to prepare before your water tank is delivered

To ensure smooth placement of your water tank, please select your site carefully. Here are some tips to help you in your site preparation.

1. Ensure that the inlet to your tank is lower than your lowest stretch of spouting. An additional fall may be necessary depending on the distance between the source of water, which may be your house roof, and your tank.

2. To prevent undermining of the site, it is important to pipe the overflow away from the tank base.

3. The size of the site needed will depend on the width of your water tank. Contact us for these details.

4. Suitable site access is your responsibility. Please ensure there are no overhead wires, branches, buildings, gate posts or other obstacles blocking access of the loaded delivery truck. Our truck driver will take every care not to damage property but cannot be responsible for damage caused due to restricted access.

5. Ensure the ground is firm enough to take the weight of a loaded truck. If you have any doubts, chat with us before delivery.

6. Check there are no holes, drains or septic tanks that the truck could potentially fall into when delivering your tank.

7. If you intend backfilling, partially burying, or totally burying your tank, please let us know when placing your order. The tank can then be manufactured to take the additional stresses placed on it.

How to ensure your Duracrete water
tank functions properly

Untitled-1

Offset alkaline tendency

As acidic rainwater replaces the town supplied water, it must be allowed to flush through the tank as soon as possible to offset any alkaline tendency. In this case, higher water usage is beneficial.

Untitled-1

Prevent syphoning

To prevent syphoning, the overflow outlet from a tank should have an internal dropper that finishes about 300mm above the tank floor. At the top of this dropper, a small diameter hole should be drilled. Droppers help with water circulation and remove older water from the tank bottom. All tanks should have individual overflows with internal droppers.

Untitled-1

Encourage a typical water tank pH range

To speed up the movement towards a typical water tank pH range (pH 7.5 to 8.5) a gradual dosing of the tank with either citric or acetic acid can be beneficial. Treatment may also require the use of a water conditioner such as Davey AquaSafe, or similar product.

Untitled-1

Prime tanks with a small amount of town supply water

Town supply has chemicals added to sanitise or control pH levels. These chemicals may lengthen the time it takes for the tank to achieve a typical pH.

Untitled-1

Encourage flow between tanks

Tubes/pipes connecting individual tanks should be as large as possible to encourage flow between tanks. At Bowers & Son Ltd, we recommend a 40mm or 50mm pipe is used. The bigger, the better.

Untitled-1

Use a floating intake

If you are using a submersible pump, ensure a floating intake is used to draw water from the fresher uppermost layers of water.

Untitled-1

Vent the tank

To encourage air flow and eliminate residual concrete smell - partially open the lid, loosen the bolts, and then raise the lids with spacers of wood or similar. For semi-buried or above ground tanks, you can temporarily remove the safety vent. For safety, do not leave tank lids off.
